If you have finally decided that your woodwork shop needs a table saw, and you want to start hunting for one, you'll soon find out that there is a wide range of them. To find the best table saw for your needs you first need to decide what type of woodworking projects that you do the majority of the time. When trying to decide on a table saw, how dedicated a woodworker you are matters a lot. Another consideration is the space that you have for your table saw and where or how it will be stored. Of course, your budget also plays an important part in your decision as well.
Not every table saw is the right one for you.
There are basically four different categories of table saws that you might consider. There are portable table saws; bench top tables saws, contractor table saws and cabinet table saws. Below you will find a short introduction for each type.
Portable table saws:
Just like the name would suggest, these are designed to be moved around with ease. If you do most of your work on 'location' then this is certainly a wise choice. These are smaller versions of the permanent bigger models and although they are much smaller in motor and work area they still can perform the same tasks.
Bench top table saws:
These table saws are ideal for work in a limited space. But for the lack of roller wheels and lengthened legs, bench top table saws can make competent portable saws. You can use them in limited spaces and the motor caliber is the same as that of a portable table saw.
Contractor table saws:
These table saws are also portable. However, they have a bigger motor and are normally used by contractors. They weigh much more than ordinary portable table saws and are more damage-resistant. The tables on these saws are normally made of cast iron. Also they can be widened to hold larger assignments. Even if you are not a contractor but enjoy more power, then this is a popular choice for the 'Tim Taylor' type of home-crafter. No matter the size or type of task you need to do, this table saw will do a great job, and is therefore a great option.
Cabinet table saws:
Speaking of doing cabinetry, this is the table saw of choice. It was designed expressly for avid woodworkers who like their table saws to be strong and last a lifetime. These are permanent table saws that come with heavy cast iron and steel casing with large motors and large working space. If you're worried about disturbing the neighbors, then you should know that this table saw makes little noise, since the motor is inside the cabinet. As far as motor power goes, there is no other table saw that can match the cabinet saw.
The cabinet table saw is clearly a poor choice, to say the least, for people who don't enjoy much space, or are on the move a lot, or who just don't have much time for wood-crafting. This type of table saw is the right choice only for those who leave and breathe for woodworking.
